Ornamental Invasion

It's a bold move on the part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Gallery at the MIA, titling a spring show reminding us of the horrendous winter from which we've finally emerged. "A Field Guide to Snow and Ice" refers to Paula McCartney's photographs—many incorporating technical strategies that allow her to play with form, scale, and expectations—which nudge our ideas of snow banks, icicles, and snowflakes into other realms. The exhibition also includes a new installation by Liz Miller, who creates avalanches of organic form and riotous color using mixed media. Her enormous piece for the gallery will use industrial felt to create a two- and three-dimensional ground for items from the MIA's collections which she'll incorporate into the piece. Reportedly, Miller has become particularly fond of the weapons in the Asian, African, and European collections. What a way to beat back winter. The opening reception, part of Third Thursday, runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 21.
