Record Store Day, the annual celebration of good ol' fashioned mom-and-pop music shops, seems to balloon into a bigger event each year. Now in its fourth go-'round, RSD will overtake 18 different businesses in the Twin Cities—and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has even gone so far as to proclaim this Saturday, April 16, "Hymie's Vintage Records Day" in honor of one of the city's longstanding stores.
To celebrate, Hymie's is ramping up its efforts this year by throwing a free street fair and hosting 10 bands, while Yeti Records will host "Girl a Whirl," four back-to-back in-store performances by girl-fronted bands. As in past years, the Minneapolis Electric Fetus (traditionally one of the stores to get the biggest selections of RSD-exclusive releases) will use a numbered ticketing system to control the flow of customers at the beginning of the day, in addition to being the only store to distribute copies of the free Radio K compilation Stuck on AM 7: Stuck on Tape.
Speaking of special RSD releases, there are a few records of local note being released this year: Green Day is issuing a split with Hüsker Dü, featuring the pop-punk band's cover of the seminal punk band's "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely" on one side and the original version on the flip, while Rhymesayers is marking the occasion by releasing a special-edition picture disc and deploying its artists to stores around the country for autograph sessions and fan meet-and-greets.
