Prepare to experience tranquility at this reading featuring Gary Snyder. The author is often remembered as a Beat poet and friend of Allen Ginsberg, though he himself has stated that he mostly considers himself part of the San Francisco Renaissance movement. Over the years Snyder's essays, lectures, and poetry have demonstrated his intense passion for Buddhist spirituality and the environment. During his career Snyder has spent a great deal of time abroad, particularly in Japan and India, and has translated literary texts from ancient China and modern Japan into English. In 1975, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his book Turtle Island, which is named after a term used by many Native American tribes for North America. For tonight's event, the Zen poet will read from works spanning his prolific career.
