Last year Joanie Smith choreographed a dance of epic proportions, "Bolero," to Ravel's explosive (and often exploited) score. It united gut-busting athleticism and gut-wrenching emotion, summoning images of people cast adrift in an anarchic world where terrorism, global warfare, and cyberspace anxieties collided. This season Smith has taken on another grand theme: the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. "Burning Air" features Smith's dynamic company in a dance-theater piece that summons all the pity and terror of, as Smith explains, "huddling in 18 inches of water, next to wild foxes and deer, hoping the firestorm passes over." The work features music by Scott Killian and words by Obie award-winning playwright and longtime collaborator David Greenspan. In addition to a reprise of "Bolero," the program offers a new work by one of the area's most aggressive emergent choreographers, Eddie Oroyan, and "Pat a Cake," a duet by Smith starring wonder women Laura Selle Virtucio and Megan McClellan.
