Next Fall

It sounds like the set-up to a modern-day Odd Couple: An atheist and a Christian fundamentalist fall in love. Can they keep their relationship alive? Geoffrey Nauffts's Tony-nominated comedy Next Fall makes its area debut at the Jungle Theater. At the center of the play is Adam (the atheist, played by Ivey winner Garry Geiken) and Luke (Neil Skoy), whose love was sparked after a life-saving Heimlich maneuver (hmm, would that make it a "meat cute?"). Life and death sit at the heart of the play, which alternates between a hospital waiting room (after one of the lovers has been hit by a taxi), and looks back at their five years together. Despite its sitcom-like foundation, Next Fall built its reputation for exploring themes of love and faith in a naturalistic manner. That's perfect fodder for director Joel Sass, another Ivey winner who rarely takes a wrong step as a creator. The cast also features Stephen Yoakam and Maggie Bearmon Pistner as Luke's parents and Andrea Leap and Sasha Andreev as close friends of Luke and Adam. (Photo by Rich Ryan)
