Videotect: A Commentary on the Skyways

The Minneapolis skyway system, the most extensive in the world, is a testament to the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the people who envisioned, constructed, and use the network of above-ground walkways. The enclosed sky bridges between buildings, which safely convey pedestrians from place to place in climate-controlled comfort, are such a fact of downtown life that Architecture Minnesota magazine asked its readers to reflect on their notions of urban life with and without skyways via short video compositions. The competition, called Videotect, drew 25 entries ranging from poetic to pedantic, enlightening to entertaining. Online voting for the best is over, but during a free screening on Thursday the audience will pick the Viewers' Choice Award. And the jurors (a who's who of notables, including film producer and director Craig Laurence Rice; Melissa Butts, founder of Melrae Picture; Steve Mitchell, partner/creative director/art director/designer at Hunt Adkin; and architect Jennifer Yoos) will be on hand to discuss their top picks.
