Pen Pals Series: Mark Doty

The second-to-last event of its current season, which has thus far featured a cast of accomplished literary figures including Lorna Landvik, Bill Bryson, and Ann Patchett, finds the Hennepin County Friends of the Library Pen Pals Author Series presenting a lecture by American poet and memoirist Mark Doty. Burgeoning writers seeking to learn from another so successful in his craft would be well-served to attend the lecture; Doty has received great praise and recognition for his work, including the National Book Critics Circle Award, two Lambda Literary Awards, the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction, and the Guggenheim fellowship. He is also the only American poet ever awarded the U.K.-based T.S. Eliot Prize, and his Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2008. A prolific writer, he has under his belt nine collections of poems and five volumes of nonfiction prose. Readers and writers alike will likely find his talk inspiring; in 1989, Doty's partner, Wally Roberts, tested positive for HIV and eventually succumbed to the illness, events which have notably influenced Doty's writing.
