Over the past two centuries Frankenstein has proven to be an infinitely malleable creation, moving far afield from Mary Shelley's original inspiration through varied adaptations in books (in Brittle Innings, Michael Bishop had the monster playing minor league baseball in Depression-era Texas), movies (from the Boris Karloff classics to an awful Kenneth Branagh version), and on the stage. Danny Boyle, director of Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, and Slumdog Millionaire, puts his own stamp on the work in this new production, which will be broadcast at the Guthrie as part of the National Theatre Live video series. Working from a new adaptation by Nick Dear (The Art of Success), Boyle crafts a production that gives Frankenstein the epic sweep the story deserves. For the production, actors Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in the recent BBC series) alternate roles as Dr. Frankenstein and the Creature. The NT Live broadcast that will be shown here features Miller as the inventor and Cumberbatch as his creation. (Photo by Catherine Ashmore)
