Flesh and Form

Performance art, in which the artist's body is a field of intervention and form of expression, has been moving from the artistic fringes to the mainstream since at least the Dadaists. So if you think Lady Gaga's doing something new, head for the art history books. Her meat dress has antecedents in Carolee Schneemann's 1964 Meat Joy. And artists Chris Burden, Marina Abramovi, and Stelarc have been newsworthy for their explorations of the body as tableaux for investigating our humanity. So what might "Flesh and Form," a new show at Altered Aesthetics, bring to the table? Reportedly, artists will "depict what it means to possess, exist, and appear in human form," which conjures images of spirit and soul, mind and intellect taking shapes not usually considered human. Case in point: During the reception, artist Judy Ostrowski will render her perception of your self as henna tattoo. The opening party is from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 1. There will also be an artists' discussion panel at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16. (Lance Ward, Brock)
