Danielson: A Family Movie

This weekend, the Southern Theater hosts the avant-pop gospel band Danielson, who hail from suburban Clarksboro, New Jersey. Led by falsetto-voiced guitarist Daniel Smith, the band have gained popularity on the indie-rock scene for their unique, exuberant style exploring Christian spirituality, their use of innovative musical instruments, and their hand-made costumes. They've recently released Best of Gloucester County (Soundsfamilyre), and are currently on tour. To preface the band's two-day stint in Minneapolis, the Southern will present a documentary about them called Danielson: A Family Movie. The film features interviews and concert footage that tell the story behind the group, including their struggle to gain acceptance by the Christian-music world and their ultimate success in the mainstream independent music community. Danielson was directed by J.L. Aronson and premiered at the SXSW Film Fest in 2006. It received the Audience Award at the Chicago Underground Film Festival, the Special Jury Award at the Sidewalk Movie Picture Festival in Birmingham, Alabama, and Best Documentary in the Northampton Independent Film Festival. Before the film, there'll be a Q&A with Danielson led by the Current's Steve Seel. (Images courtesy of director J.L. Aronson)
