Poppet-voiced provocateur Sarah Silverman splits the difference between Don Rickles and Audrey Hepburn—and that's quite a difference to split. She delivers bombastic jokes about race and sex with a wide-eyed naiveté that lends the lines extra edge, all with only the faintest glimmer of wry recognition to let you know she's in on the gag. Silverman will be at the U this Wednesday to read from her new book, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redepmtion, and Pee (Harper), and answer questions (and, hopefully, do a little standup). The Bedwetter touches on her time rising through the comedy world and appearing in some of the most influential TV series of her time (including Saturday Night Live, The Larry Sanders Show, and Mr. Show with Bob and David) on the way to writing and starring in her own self-titled Comedy Central program, but much of the book is a poignant and painfully funny recollection of her troubled childhood, which included bouts with depression, addiction, and, yes, bedwetting. It's a substantial read that Silverman never lets sag under the weight of self-pity. Rather, she turns her sardonic wit on her own foibles while maintaining a consistently positive tone and breezy delivery. (It's tough to be too grim in a book that features a photo of one of her former staff writers with a hairclip clasped around his genitals.)
