Ragamala Dance: Yathra (Journey)

One of only two U.S.-based companies invited to perform in the Kennedy Center's recent Maximum Indian Festival, Ragamala Dance knocked the socks off of the audience and received a standing ovation. A frequently cranky New York Times critic declared them "an excellent company" and threw around superlatives like "...the closeness of the liaison between music and dance was often bewitching" and "[Ragamala] showed how Indian forms can provide some of the most transcendent experiences that dance has to offer." This internationally renowned company imbues the ancient south Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam with sculptural clarity, lively precision, and a thoroughly contemporary exuberance. "Yathra (Journey)" traces the cycle of life from birth to death, and features an original score by Shubhendra and Saskia Rao. Expect to be swept away. (Photo by Ed Bock)
