More About
Joe Chvala has been blending traditional and contemporary percussive dance forms, European myths and folk tales, and wildly imagistic dance theater since 1990. In his newest work, "Heaven," a Balkan score mash-up of pop, rap, rock, and opera by Chan Poling drives a photographer's harrowing odyssey through conflict-torn Bosnia. The clamor and chaos of war would seem an ideal subject for Chvala's philosophy of percussive dance as a conduit to primal urges and primitive rites. Rooted to the earth and howling at the moon, the hard-driving dancers of Chvala's Flying Foot Forum embody both the ravages of war and the humanity embedded in suffering. (Photo by Joe Chvala)
