Firken Fest

Do discussions of bright beer, shives, and beer engines delight you? Then you, my dear beer geek, belong at the Happy Gnome's Firkin Fest, where they'll be tappin' and serving over 80 firkins until they run dry. It's the fourth annual incarnation of the event, which celebrates the art of cask-conditioned ale. Unlike regular keg or bottled beer, these live brews have been refermentated, and are unfiltered and tapped naturally without additional CO2 or nitrogen. Last year saw the consumption of 64 fine offerings from Liftbridge, Flying Dog, Surly, and Avery, so the bar is set high. Are you fearful that they'll run out early like last year? Not this time, as the Gnome has changed some key details of the proceedings. This year, Gnome manager Catherine Pflueger will sell just 1,600 entries to the big tent, so participants will be sure to get their fill of local, U.S., and foreign quaffs (a firkin holds 72 pints or 9 imperial gallons). She's also doing away with those annoying drink tickets and increasing the number of temporary toilets. It all means that if you'd like to wallow in casks and casks of real ale, you'd better sign up at the Happy Gnome's website soon. The VIP spots are already sold out for this afternoon of sampling and merriment, which starts at 1 p.m. and runs until the liquid gold is gone (although the doors close at 5 p.m.). (Photo by Plinkk)
