Tim Carroll

Part performance art, part installation, Tim Carroll's eponymous gallery show is intense to say the least. Before its opening, every wall and column of the studio's 12,000 square foot space will be covered with commercial tar paper. Throughout the entirety of the exhibition, Carroll will use chalk to create continuous lines along the walls—for a planned 98 hours total. This task, taking up to six hours a day, is a physical challenge as well as a mental one. "I begin to feel like a human download bar or a prisoner making hash marks in their cell," states Carroll. The piece, which the artist says is as meditative as it is redundant, is a sequel to his 2010 show, "Monumental Minimalism," where he drew hundreds of thousands of lines onto tar paper. The opening reception features live music and soundscapes by Jaime Carrera and others from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 12.
