Mack Lecture: Jim Shaw

The Walker's current exhibit "Spectacular of Vernacular" explores the low-brow, folk, and homemade art world—meaning the art that typically finds its way to the mantle, not the museum. It's the stuff you find at a garage sale, online at etsy, or perhaps even in your basement. American artist Jim Shaw will discuss this type of art, and how common kitsch, found objects, and thrift-store shopping can inspire interesting work. In 2000 Shaw caused quite a stir with his show, "Thrift Store Paintings," an exhibit featuring the mostly anonymous work by (presumably) untrained Midwestern artists that he had collected from various sources. He'll be joined this afternoon by chief curator Darsie Alexander. Together, they will discuss the quirks and inspirations for such pieces of art.
