Why the self portrait? Does hubris, narcissism, introspection, or mere convenience drive the urge to make oneself a subject of artistic inquiry? Vincent van Gogh was perhaps the most prolific self-portraitist, having painted himself 37 times. Perhaps he and Frida Kahlo found enough pain and suffering within their own bodies and psyches for their selves to serve as a lifetime of subject matter. Arguably, Pablo Picasso and Chuck Close created self portraits to explore autobiographical personas and investigate aesthetic expression. A new show opening this weekend, "Inside Out: The Self Portrait Show," allows 26 Twin Cities artists to explore the self as artist, intrigue, expression, and invention. Artists including Jennifer Davis, Sean Smuda, Irve Dell, Pete Dreissen, Michael Sommers, and Kyle Fokken serve themselves up. Carl Jung described the Self as an archetype signifying a coherent whole or unified consciousness. What might creative self-reflection rendered via paint, ink, or photography have to say? The opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 12. (Jennifer Davis)
