No longer ripping under the cover of night, Greg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) took a bold if legally dubious step on All Day. His tracks have always been constructed exclusively from excerpts of songs that other people made famous, but this time the excerpts are longer and even more immediately recognizable—in some cases featuring entire choruses. Gillis has always maintained that his sample-and-stitch appropriation constitutes fair use (a defense to copyright infringement), even though the name of his record label is Illegal Art. So far, he's managed to avoid having his interpretation of fair use tested in a court of law; however, given Gillis's rising profile (his back-to-back headlining shows at First Ave have been sold out for months), one suspects the major labels won't be able to ignore him much longer.
