There seems to be a lot of backlash lately about the increasing coolness of nerd culture. This upheaval is unwarranted and misdirected. Is it so terrible for the world to finally be privy to all of the secret awesomeness that, as teenagers, nerds wanted so badly to share? No. Altered Esthetics is going to show people who want to keep those things cloistered that cool is cool—whether popular or obscure—with the opening of "Fanboi: Art inspired by fandom and devotion to characters, stories, or icons in film, music, or gaming culture." There will be art from, among others, Dim Media's Blaine Garrett, Charles Denton, and Joe Lipscomb. Their eerie and accurate Paparazzi series—including most notably portraits of David Bowie, Zooey Deschanel, and Steve Buscemi (as Edgar Allan Poe)—is sure to cause a stirring in the hearts of nerds of all varieties. Altered Esthetics, an art space founded by Jamie Schumacher that focuses on an "art for art's sake" approach, offers a new show and reception on the first Friday of each month. The opening party for "Fanboi" is from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 4. There will also be an artists' discussion at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. (Dim Media,The Good Doctor)
