The youngest of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis's four talented sons, Jason Marsalis has been known primarily as an accomplished and versatile drummer. Steeped in the traditional jazz and second line rhythms of his native New Orleans, he's also well-versed in contemporary jazz and Latin music. With Bill Summers and Irvin Mayfield, he was a co-founder of the scintillating Los Hombres Calientes, but left to play in pianist Marcus Roberts's trio. This quartet, one of his several ongoing projects, includes musicians he met at a Florida State residency: pianist Austin Johnson, bassist Will Goble, drummer David Potter. Marsalis is on vibes full-time, introducing some Crescent City flavor and distinctive rhythm patterns while playing originals and covers of the likes of Lionel Hampton and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
