Branford Marsalis Quartet, Terence Blanchard Quintet

Both New Orleans natives, both graduates of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and trumpeter Terence Blanchard each have had profound influences on contemporary jazz. They will each lead their respective top-notch ensembles on the same stage—consider it an extravagant, early Mardi Gras lagniappe. Branford (pictured), the most eclectic of the talented Marsalis brood, freely roams from jazz to classical, funk, rock, and pop, also distinguishing himself as an educator and by spearheading housing recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina. Blanchard's cool, burnished tone and deeply philosophical approach to jazz have distinguished his own albums and the more than 50 soundtracks he's written. Many have been for Spike Lee's films, including his Katrina documentary, When the Levee Broke. (Photo by Palma Kolansky)
