If you're feeling deprived because the Art Shanties are taking a year off, you can still get a bit of a community-art-in-the-snow fix at the 4th Annual Powderhorn Art Sled Rally this Sunday, when more than 400 people are expected to commune at the park. Theater artist Julian McFaul, who is one of the organizers, says that some past art sleds have included a giant 400-pound bed, a six-pack of Grain Belt that exploded at the bottom of the hill, a chessboard sled, and a Pac-Man-themed sled. The event was started four years ago by a group of artists who were all experienced in community art projects, but who also wanted to do something for their own neighborhood. The grassroots group, called South Sixteenth High Jinks, organized a few small projects, eventually deciding to host a winter event. McFaul says that in addition to the fun and art, the organizers take safety pretty seriously. All sledders need to sign a waiver, and there will be helmets available. There already have been a few workshops for people to work on their sleds; another one will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, January 29, at the Powderhorn Park Gym. (Photos by Anna Lethert)
