Tandem

This shared program features work by Minneapolis-based April Sellers and Chicago-based Rachel Damon, women whose fierce, fresh, and aggressively experimental work is both under the radar and over the top. Sellers's theatrical mélanges incorporate text, song, and dance in clamorous feminist oracles that are often canny and droll. Her solo "Acceptable Doses" plays around with assumptions people have made about her as a choreographer who often works with nudity. "Instructions to Fancy Park" is, according to Sellers, "Your local bowling team meets the Supremes." It certainly contains an all-star cast of eccentric performers, including Greg Schutte of Jello Slave, the deliciously wry Susan Scalf, and powerhouse Kenna Cottman. Damon's "Factor Ricochet" grapples with perceptions and projections of gender, while in "fourbound" her dancers struggle with ensemble tasks and the human condition. Damon has been described as choreographing with "a sense that inner emotional stages are shifting like mercury." (Photo by Megan Mayer)
