École de Klein Mash-up: Monochrome-making, Dance, and Lecture

Art gets interactive at the Walker Art Center's École de Klein Mash-up: Monochrome-making, Dance, and Lecture. At 6 p.m., dancers from SuperGroup will use Yves Klein's paintings as a basis for improvisation, bringing the works off the walls and into the galleries while dressed in brightly colored monochrome body suits. Erin Search-Wells from SuperGroup says the troupe actually purchased the garb a few years ago for the Walker's Choreographers' Evening. They got a call this year from the museum asking them to wear the costumes for November's Free First Saturday, and they will once again put them on for tonight's event. Search-Wells says that they'll incorporate moments of stillness, contact and structured improvisation, and a bit of repeated choreography. Ashley Duffalo, who is coordinating the program, says that the evening will also feature a drop-in art-making workshop with Christian Nielsen, who will be demonstrating different tool and medium effects on a monochrome painting that participants get to try out during the event. The evening also features a lecture by Christa Haiml, who will be talking about Klein's materials and processes, in addition to the preservation of his work, at 7 p.m. (SuperGroup photo by Cameron Wittig)
