Weather got you down? Does the thought of three (or more) months of winter make you want to give up and just sit at home mindlessly surfing the web for hours on end? Does all the forced joy of the holidays make you want to scream? Happy the Clown knows your pain. In Eric F. Avery's The Winter Adventures of Happy, the SAD Clown, our hero can't stand the holidays or the long winter. To combat his condition, Happy goes on a journey to find some joy amid the bleakness of the season. Avery, a founding member of Savage Umbrella, tells the story via traditional clowning techniques. Happy will not speak during performances, instead sharing his sadness and his journey through Avery's own skills, aided by music by Ben Mattson and direction from Julie Metzger-Traber. For those interested in learning more about clowning, Avery will also be holding a clown workshop from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, at the National Theatre for Children (2733 Park Ave., Minneapolis).
