Are we what we own? How do our personal possessions alter the way we view ourselves and how others perceive us? These are a few of the questions that may arise at the Soap Factory's latest gallery show, "Belongings." In it, filmmaker Rosemary Williams documents every single item found in her home, literally. Different segments of the piece will be projected large-scale onto the Soap's walls, with each area of the gallery space representing a different room in her residence. While Williams has explored questions surrounding consumerism in her past works Supermarket (2008) and Wall of Mall (2006), her latest project is certainly more personal. Will audiences feel despair at the futility of ownership? Or fascinated at the significance mundane objects can have on the psyche? They'll have plenty of time to decide; one could spend an entire day watching each screen for an hour and never see an item repeat. The opening reception is from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, December 18. The gallery will be closed from December 23 through January 5, 2011.
