50/50: Audience and Experts Curate the Paper Collection

Crowd funding, crowd sourcing, and now, crowd curating: The democratization of endeavors formerly the domain of the euphemistic "elite" now enters the curatorial realm with the Walker Art Center's new show, "50/50: Audience and Experts Curate the Paper Collection." Opening Thursday, the exhibition includes 100 ink, pencil, marker, gouache, and watercolor works selected by individuals who cast 250,000 online votes for their favorites. Works that got the most digital thumbs-up are by Fiona Banner, Edgar Arceneaux, Chuck Close, Frank Big Bear, and Charles Sheeler. The iconographic past, evolving present, and future directions for works on paper are all found in the show, which inherently challenges high/low distinctions in art and in art's curation. The people have spoken. The opening reception is from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, December 16. (Art by Kiki Smith)
