The last century in China has been tumultuous, with huge leaps and falls that have contributed to the country's status as a burgeoning superpower today. However, many overlook the radical changes in fashion made during China's most pivotal periods. The exhibition at the Goldstein Museum, "Mao to Now: Chinese Fashion from 1949 to Present" explores the monumental metamorphoses that clothing and style have undergone during the last century in China. From the post-dynastic and pre-Maoist beginnings to Mao-era suits, Chinese fashion has evolved since 1977 into a collection of dramatic, radical, and unique styles. The exhibit demonstrates how Chinese apparel has blossomed and even embraced Western design techniques in a fashion-forward fusion of traditional and contemporary ideas. Four renowned Chinese fashion designers will showcase their work at the exhibit as well, including Wu Haiyan, Liu Canming, Wang Yiyang, and Zhang Da. The clothing included illuminates the stark contrast in fashion between the plain, utilitarian Mao suits to the structured silhouettes, plus the unconventional patterns of today's ready-to-wear and haute couture looks. Further highlighting the sociopolitical catalysts that sparked sartorial change in China, the gallery will display photographs by high-profile Chinese photojournalists that captured the country's triumphs and heartbreaks.
