More About

Even more than at most film fests, you will take your chances on quality at the Underground Film Festival. But for adventurous moviegoers willing to roll the dice, the third annual festival of obscure, experimental, and overlooked films will screen 62 works over three days in a showcase that ranges from raunchy to refined and amateurish to professional. More than half the films this year were made in Minnesota. Friday's lineup includes the world premiere of Macumba, by festival organizer Greg Yolen, a 17-minute film about a young American couple who try to start a new life in Costa Rica but encounter evil forces of black magic; and Minneapolis Project 2010, a program of shorts by 20 Minnesota filmmakers on various aspects of life in the city. On Saturday, the feature-length Camilla Hyde tells the story of a nerdy virgin who falls victim to a cruel sexual prank by a friend but takes her revenge when a psychiatrist performing hypnosis accidentally unleashes her wild alter ego. Two short-film showcases also screen Saturday, including one of Spanish-language films. Sunday features more shorts plus entries such as The Darkness Within, about an engaged couple who must contend with a bizarre voyeur, and My Art School Summer, an animated sex comedy.
