The Santaland Diaries

Since David Sedaris first shared his experiences as an elf at a Macy's department store in 1992, The Santaland Diaries have become a holiday tradition, either as a broadcast of Sedaris's reading or in one of the increasing number of stage productions of Joe Mantello's (Love! Valour! Compassion!) adaptation. Frank Theatre—best known for bringing difficult pieces to the stage, such as this fall's Eclipsed, about the Liberian civil war—heads into the holidays with a production of the acerbic piece at Hennepin Stages. The production stars Joe Leary, who has appeared locally at the History Theatre, Theater Latte Da, and with Mary Worth, along with several Off Broadway turns, as Crumpet the elf, who shares his experiences with oddball characters amid the forced cheer of the seasonal commercial celebration. Director Wendy Knox is no stranger to the material either—she has previously directed productions in Syracuse and Portland.
Sundays, 2 p.m.; Tuesdays, 7 p.m.; Wednesdays, Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, 8:30 p.m. Starts: Nov. 28. Continues through Dec. 31, 2010
