For more than half a century, choreographer Paul Taylor has been creating dances that range from lyrical paeans, to the fluid dynamics of bodies in motion, to darker forays into our animal nature. He can make you gasp with wonder, or as one critic put it, "scare the living daylights out of you." He can also be very witty, as in Cloven Kingdom, where guys in tuxedos and women in evening dress devolve from young sophisticates to beings far more nasty, brutish, and primeval. Brief Encounters explores another group of innocent young people on the cusp of sexual experience. In "Esplanade," which many dance enthusiasts consider a masterpiece of 20th-century modernism, Taylor takes a few simple pedestrian moves (running, falling, skipping, crawling) and turns them into a display of exuberant athleticism with deep emotional resonance.
