Third Thursday

The charge was simple: Create three looks inspired by pieces in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' permanent collection. Local designers Laura Fulk, Raul Osorio, Samantha Rei, and Emma Berg gladly signed on. Fulk's palette starts with a Harold Edgerton photograph, while Rei's pick is the Art Deco furniture on the top floor of the museum. Berg has chosen three very different artworks, and Osorio has revealed a Facebook post of some stunning menswear items in progress. Now, after months of preparation, the clothes are ready. The MIA and MNFashion are hosting a celebratory gala, giving the regular Third Thursday event an injection of style with a real runway show. The fashion presentation is free, as are the rest of the museum-wide festivities, which include live music by rockers Pink Mink and DJ Bach. There's also a cash bar. Other area fashionista wares round out the show, with handbags by Urban Junket, jewelry by Helen Wang and Retrospect Designs, and clothing and accessories by Ruby 3's Anna Lee. All comers are encouraged to don their own fine-arts fashion, whether vintage, haute, or self-sewed up in the attic. Admission to the MIA's galleries is also gratis, so visitors can see the masterpieces that led to the looks. (Fashion by Emma Berg, photo by Emily Utne)
