The Way It Wasn't (Celebrating Ten Years of Castillo/Corrales, Paris)

A Paris-based collective of artists, curators, critics, and writers, Castillo/Corrales produces high-concept work that will either rock your world or send you screaming to the relative safety of grandma's rocker. Silence and the sonic, the performative and the digital, films and spoken word, pools of paint and piles of stuff, satire and polemics all fall within the purview of these conceptual artists. Their work can demand a steady stream of discourse to parse the obvious from the dense layers of cultural commentary buried within each signifier, be it a piece of fabric or line of poetry. If you need more of a handle on their work, consider this: Earlier this year the collective hosted a show exploring the artistic beginnings of Oscar-winning film director Kathryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker), including her forays into collaborative work with the iconoclasts such as Lawrence Weiner, Vito Acconci, and Richard Serra. Before the opening, there will be a panel talk 7 p.m. Thursday, November 18 at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The opening reception is 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, November 20, with a curatorial talk held at 3 p.m. earlier in the day.
Nov. 20-Jan. 15, 2010
