The first Minnesota artist to be presented in the Northrop Dance Series in more than two decades, Emily Johnson brings a witty and heartfelt meditation (with plenty of action) on what it feels like to be in two places at once. The Alaska native vividly recalls growing up and hanging out at her grandmother's pub, the Que-Ana Bar, which means "Thank You Bar" in her native Yup'ik language. Now living in Minneapolis, Johnson explores what it means, physically and emotionally, to be part of two cultures. The performance installation interweaves live music by Blackfish, film, story, and dance. Audience members will be seated on the Northrop Stage for a surround-sound experience. Related events include a Blackfish concert on Friday, November 19, and an exhibit of works by Native artists open one hour before performances and from 1 to 5 p.m.
Nov. 18-20, 7 & 9 p.m., 2010
