Swedish author Stieg Larsson's posthumously released Millennium Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest) has proven a uniquely persistent presence on fiction bestseller lists around the world. Likewise, the Swedish film adaptations have smashed box-office records even as acclaimed director David Fincher signed on for the seemingly inevitable Hollywood remakes. Considering such ubiquitous exposure, it's no surprise Larsson figures prominently in this year's Nordic Lights Film Festival. Screening at the Parkway Theater, Millennium—The Story delves into the trilogy's history, including Larsson's own real-life adventures as an investigative journalist, experiences which gave rise to the series' overarching storyline. Following Sunday's screening, a panel of scholars and crime-fiction enthusiasts will discuss the trilogy's resonance in the context of Nordic arts and culture. Those experiencing Millennium Trilogy fatigue, however, will find plenty of other options to explore the diverse ranges of Nordic cinema, including an impressive selection of short films and feature presentations from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. And if additional diversions are needed, an array of dancers and musicians will be on hand to further invigorate this Nordic celebration.
