Peace & Harmony

While some art expounds the virtues of battle, some celebrates peace, tranquility, and an end to war. The latter type will be explored this Sunday at the MIA's family-friendly Peace & Harmony. Throughout the day there will be various activities to encourage tots and grownups alike to balance their lives. Guests can participate in a yoga class, or print their own Tibetan prayer flag. Artists can pick up Bob Ross-style tips on creating harmonious painting compositions. Also, costumed characters will be on hand to talk about Peace Concluded (1859), an oil painting by Sir John Everett Millais depicting a British soldier surrounded by family as he reads a newspaper trumpeting the end of the Crimean War. While reviews of the piece were unfavorable at the time, art critic John Ruskin declared it a masterpiece. Surprising, considering that Ruskin's wife had previously left him for Millais. How's that for peace and harmony? (Photo by katerha)
