Lionel Popkin: There Is an Elephant in This Dance

Choreographer Lionel Popkin's obsession with the Hindu elephant god Ganesh is complicated. Popkin explores the iconography of Ganesh, as well as its personal implications for him as the son of a Jewish father and South Asian mother. By turns uncanny, unsettling, and amusing, this multilayered work features a cast that includes the writer/performer/provocateur Ishmael Houston-Jones, local 2010 Guggenheim recipient Morgan Thorson, Bessie Award-winner Carolyn Hall, and Popkin himself. Music is by former Minnesotan Robert Een. (Photo by Andre Andreez)
