Leslie Holt: Hello Masterpiece

Artist Leslie Holt, who hails from St. Louis, has produced a curious series called "Hello, Masterpiece," on view tonight at the Burnet Gallery. She creates postcard-size reproductions of famous paintings, such as Klimt's The Kiss and Monet's water lilies—the iconic works that end up on dorm walls as posters or as love notes—then stamps each one with a tiny Hello Kitty image. Irony abounds. Like an East Asian seal or signature (sometimes called a chop), those anime kitties hail from Japan. Just as mass reproduction transforms priceless artworks into items for mass consumption, Holt removes her images from mainstream commerce by transforming them into singular works of art. Laugh or cry, Holt's got chutzpah. The opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 12. (Pictured: Hello Klimt Kiss)
