It's not uncommon to hear someone joke about having obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a person with perfectionist tendencies may feel like they exhibit symptoms on their most stressful days. However, when someone actually has O.C.D., it can get in the way of simply living life; its sufferers often feel compelled to spend huge amounts of time completing tasks (locking and unlocking doors, counting hangers in the closet each night, etc.). And while it's sometimes depicted as cute and a little quirky on television shows like Glee, people who actually have the disorder would hardly describe it as charming. For Altered Esthetics' latest show, "O.C.D.," artists living with the affliction were invited to creatively respond. Pieces on display will explore artists' experiences, frustrations, struggles, and triumphs with humor, honesty, and lots of patterns. The show is intended to open up a dialogue as well as inform those unfamiliar with the reality of O.C.D. The opening reception is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, November 5, and an artists' discussion panel is also planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, November 20. (Art by Bryan VanDonslear)
