This Sunday, the Loft and Kieran's Irish Pub invite literature lovers to come dressed as their favorite dead writer for a Halloween-themed open mic celebration. The event is earlier in the evening and parents are encouraged to bring their kids before trick-or-treating. This will be the second year for the reading party. Organizer Lorena Duarte has said that the initial inspiration came from other dead poet events that she has been a part of or had heard of over the years, except she wanted to open this one up and make it not a slam, but rather "a fun evening where people can get their literary freak on—literally." Duarte said last year there was a wide array of characters that showed up: Anaïs Nin, Kurt Vonnegut, and a pirate that got up and recited Jabberwocky by heart. The winner of the costume contest last year was Ann Coulter, who best represented a writer with a cold, dead heart. The open mic is a fundraiser for the Loft, and the suggested donation is $10—but no one will be turned away if they give less. There will also be a costume contest where winners will be bestowed with literary prizes. All ages. (Photo by SpecialKRB)
