Urban Bush Women: Zollar: Uncensored

Urban Bush Women burst upon the scene in the 1980s, a group of fierce and funny women of color who told it like it was. In this retrospective, UBW's founding artistic director, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, reprises excerpts from some of her in-your-face works from that period, including frank explorations of female eroticism, sensuality, and torment. "I did everything they said you don't do," says Zollar. For 25 years, UBW has been celebrating women with a strong sense of self and a determination to confront and overcome cultural, historical, and personal injustice. And they do it with dances that are raw and sophisticated, down to earth and bound for glory. (Image by Ayano Hisa)
