Flourish

Local darlings Jennifer Davis, Erika Olson Gross, Terrence Payne, and Joe Sinness will no doubt be amidst a crush of adoring fans when their work is showcased at the MAEP Gallery. Davis may be the best known of the four. Through her creepy, captivating paintings and collages, she infuses candy-colored girls and fantastical creatures with the sinuous lines and delicate colors of Japanese anime by way of Guillermo del Toro. Mysterious whimsy is also Payne's domain, but his characters float within layered worlds of kinetic patterning. Olson Gross sells cuteness on Etsy—heirloom-quality bears and dolls—and her multimedia artwork situates this sensibility in topsy-turvy worlds of childlike perception. The most political of the artists is Sinness, who cuts the whimsy in his work with earthy tones and hints of impending apocalypse. The opening reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 21.
