Comedians' and comic writers' lives aren't any funnier than ours, of course; the humor lies in what they choose to notice and exaggerate. Yet David Sedaris gives the illusion of living funnier in the first place because his sense of absurdity and irony is so candid, tolerant, and affectionately wry. His autobiographical books never waste a line—you can open them at random and laugh within seconds—yet you never feel as if he's sacrificing an observation for a good one, and his thematic momentum builds out of realistic behavior and dialogue, internal or otherwise. Like his sister Amy Sedaris, he's also blessed with a comic voice, which makes him a great radio presence and reader. He's always been funny describing animals, and is touring behind a new collection of anthropomorphizing stories illustrated by Ian Falconer, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, out on Little, Brown.
