Margaret Cho

It's kind of hard to believe that Margaret Cho has been doing standup comedy for 25 years. Where did the time go? "I actually started my career as a comic when I was 16," she explains. "By the time I was 18 or 19, I was pretty much settled into what I was going to do." In 1994 she landed her own sitcom, American Girl, something that, in retrospect, may have come too soon. "Yeah, I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't have any money and I didn't have any position," she recalls. "I really had to make that thing work, and I didn't know how to do that. I was just so young and so inexperienced I really didn't know, so that was very tough." The inspiration for her last tour, called "Beautiful," came from a radio host asking what she would do if she woke up the next morning and was beautiful. An odd thing to propose, as no one ever said Cho wasn't attractive. "It's just sort of this attitude," she says, "this idea that there is a conventional kind of beauty. That beauty can be qualified, that there is a value put on it." (Image by Lindsey Byrnes)
