Jimmy Pardo

This may be your last opportunity to see comedian Jimmy Pardo for a while. The funnyman and pioneering podcaster has been on a mini-summer tour of sorts, but now it's winding down. Pardo had steady work warming up the crowd on Conan's Tonight Show, but then, as you know, that came to a rather abrupt halt in the spring. "When we all got fired from NBC," he explains, "a lot of clubs called and said, 'Hey, Jimmy's available to go on the road now—can we book him?' I was panicked that I didn't have a job, so I didn't say no to anybody." Conan starts a new show on TBS this fall, so he will presumably have full-time work again. Joining Jimmy on many of his standup dates in 2010 is Minneapolis's own Matt Frugate, whose mix of observation and storytelling balances well with Pardo's set. "It's a hybrid," Frugate explains. "It's really just me presenting my life at 42. Cosby was a huge influence so there's a little bit of that. There's social commentary, but I don't get political." There is some ridiculousness however. "Wallpaper Now," he chuckles, referring to his most memorable bit. "I love that joke, and it's so much fun to tell. It's the silliest thing I've ever written. I just wondered: What would a commercial look like if Nazis owned that wallpaper store?" He bristles a little at the notion that it might be his signature bit, a la Jim Gaffigan and Hot Pockets. "Oh, no!" he laughs. "The Hot Pocket people actually showed up at [Gaffigan's] shows—passing out coupons. I don't want the Nazis showing up at my shows!"
