ARENA Dances: not so good at standing still

Founding a full-time dance company—as opposed to a pick-up part-time group—is a heroic act in these economic times. Choreographer Matthew Janczewski makes the leap with a new nine-member troupe that includes the man himself, a dancer whose performing and choreography combine supple athleticism and visceral drama. His new, evening-length piece celebrates the birth struggles of a fledgling organization and the evolution of a terrifically powerful family of dancers. The group incorporates several graduates of the University of Minnesota's world-class dance program, including the exhilarating artistry of Amy Behm-Thomson, Janczewski's longtime muse, and the fresh talents of Tristan Koepke and Luke Olson-Elm.
