In 2007 and 2008, Minneapolis was named America's Most Literate City by Central Connecticut State University. Unfortunately, Seattle surpassed us in 2009, but we can win it back by supporting local presses such as Milkweed Editions, which is celebrating 30 years of literary excellence and independent publishing at Clubhouse Jäger. What better place to celebrate literature than at a bar with a dance floor, after all? The event, called JägerVerse: Poetry at the Public House, is co-sponsored by Milkweed Editions and l'etoile magazine, and will feature readings by four hot young poets who have been gaining national attention for their challenging and engaging work. Dan Beachy-Quick, Alex Lemon, Ada Limón, and Wayne Miller all have either been published by Milkweed or have books forthcoming. One of the largest independent nonprofit literary presses in the nation, Milkweed publishes 15 to 20 books per year, with more than 200 in print. So come and listen to some exciting new work, have a cocktail, mingle with the local literati, and maybe get yourself on the dance floor as Milkweed looks toward another 30 years.
