Vigil

Vigil has received good notices from productions in New York, nearly all of which have commented that the play is a uniquely strange combination of comedy, cruelty, and death obsession that explores a discomfiting and squishy emotional landscape. It's the story of a bitter, unlikable bank drone who takes on the care of his elderly aunt in hopes of seeing her off this mortal coil as quickly as possible in order to cash in on her estate. The twist is that the old lady isn't going to cooperate, and seems fully capable of waiting him out until he's ready for the rocking chair himself. This Pillsbury House production stars Shirley Venard and the devilish Steve Hendrickson. Sometimes downright meanness can make one feel positively giddy, after all.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Oct. 17, 2010
