Ananya Dance Theatre: Kshoy!/Decay!

The powerful, culturally diverse women who make up Ananya Dance Theatre embody millions of persecuted women every time they take the stage. Following on the heels of ADT's trilogy on environmental justice, "Kshoy!/Decay!" is the first installment in a four-year anti-violence project exploring experiences of women of color throughout the world. Mud is the metaphor here for an intensely abstract investigation of the afterlives of Asian, African, and other women forced to abandon their homelands. They do this through a physically and emotionally compelling blend of classical Indian Odissi dance, yoga, and the martial art form Chhau, choreographed by artistic director Ananya Chatterjea, a force of nature in her own right. "These women are keeping memories written on their bodies because they have nowhere else to keep them," said Laurie Carlos, the OBIE award-winning performer who co-directed and created text for the piece. Indeed, ADT's ferocious commitment and fierce warrior energy seems enough to eradicate social injustice and take feminism to a whole new level. (Image by V. Paul Virtucio)
