B-Girl Be: Sideshow

B-Girl Be is such a great dance and live hip-hop event that its value as an art exhibit goes underrated. But the work associated with this (nearly) annual celebration of women in hip hop is consistently worth seeking out for its own sake. This year, keeping with the carnival theme of the upcoming Labor Day weekend block party, curator Michele Spaise one-ups the conceptual ante with an interactive show of seven artists (Spaise herself, Christina Rimstad, Katrina Knutson, Keegan Xavi, Rebecca McDonald, Jessica Kitzman, and Ivoire Foreman), each holding a funhouse mirror to the "freak" status of females in the culture they love. The public reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, August 19, with DJ, doubles as a "hair-raising" fundraiser for B-Girl Be, with eight stylists from Moxie Hair Salon offering $30 cuts.
